Speech & Language Learning Support Assistant - SEN School, Northampton

Tradewind Recruitment is looking for a Speech and Language Learning Support Assistant to join a welcoming, child-focused SEN school that supports pupils aged 4-18 with a wide range of complex needs. You will work closely with teachers, speech and language therapists, and the wider SEN team to deliver targeted communication support and assist with personalised learning plans. Pupils may present with significant speech and language delays, non-verbal communication, sensory needs, and physical disabilities requiring safe, supported movement-so manual handling training or readiness to undertake this training is highly advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting pupils with autism and speech, language, and communication needs

  • Using communication systems such as PECS, Makaton, or AAC (training provided if needed)

  • Implementing personalised SALT strategies and structured interventions

  • Assisting with sensory regulation, emotional well-being, and engagement in learning

  • Providing safe and appropriate support for pupils with physical disabilities

  • Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff

  • Building positive, trusting relationships with students and their families

Requirements

  • Experience working with SEN, particularly autism and communication needs

  • Understanding of speech and language strategies or willingness to learn

  • Manual handling training (desirable)

  • A patient, calm, and resilient approach

  • DBS on the update service or willingness to obtain one
