Job Description

SEMH Class Teacher (Unqualified or QTS)

Location: Barnoldswick (Commutable from Colne, Nelson, Earby, and Skipton)

School Type: Specialised SEMH Provision

Contract: Full-time, Long-term

The Role: Lead, Inspire, and Transform

Are you a teacher who believes that "behavior is communication"? We are looking for a resilient and creative SEMH Teacher to lead a small class of students in Barnoldswick.

Whether you are a fully qualified teacher (QTS) or an experienced Instructor/Unqualified Teacher with a background in specialised settings, your ability to connect with "hard-to-reach" learners is what matters most. In this environment, your success is measured by the breakthroughs in confidence and emotional regulation your students achieve.

A Day in the Life of an SEMH Teacher

  • 08:30 - Staff Briefing: A quick huddle with the SLT and your TAs. You'll discuss any "triggers" from the previous evening or transport issues affecting a student's mood as they arrive.

  • 08:45 - The Meet & Greet: You are at the door. This is the most crucial part of the day reading body language and "checking in" with every student to gauge their emotional state.

  • 09:15 - Nurture Breakfast & Literacy: We start with food and conversation. You'll lead a low-pressure literacy session while your TAs support those who need a slower start.

  • 10:30 - De-escalation & Pivot: A student becomes overwhelmed. You remain calm, allowing your TA to use a "withdrawal" space while you keep the rest of the class focused.

  • 11:00 - Creative Curriculum: You deliver a hands-on Science or Topic lesson. Today, it's a practical experiment using engagement to bypass the "fear of failure."

  • 12:30 - Restorative Lunch: You might eat with the pupils or supervise a club. This is where real bonds are built over a game of football or a chat about music.

  • 14:00 - Personal Development: You lead a session on social skills, helping students understand their own "zones of regulation."

  • 15:00 - Student Departure & Debrief: Once the taxis have left, the team sits down. You'll log incidents, celebrate "small wins," and prep for a fresh start tomorrow.

Who We Are Looking For

  • You must be unflappable, empathetic, and able to start every day with a "fresh start" policy.

  • Proven experience teaching or leading groups of children with SEMH & ASC.

  • We welcome applications from QTS, QTLS, or Unqualified Teachers with significant experience in PRUs or residential care.
