Job Description
Male Teaching Assistant - SEN School (Northampton)
Via Tradewind Recruitment
Tradewind Recruitment is currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Male Teaching Assistant to work in a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school in Northampton. This is a rewarding opportunity to support children and young people with physical disabilities and complex learning needs, including wheelchair users, pupils with cerebral palsy, and students with severe autism that significantly impacts speech, communication, and social interaction.
The school provides a highly supportive, inclusive, and structured environment where pupils require consistent, patient, and empathetic adults to help them access learning and daily activities. Due to the personal care and physical support involved, the school has requested a male support worker for this role.
As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with class teachers, therapists, and other support staff to help pupils engage with learning, manage sensory needs, and achieve their individual EHCP targets. You will provide 1:1 and small-group support, assist with mobility and transfers, and help pupils develop communication skills using tools such as PECS, Makaton, or assistive technology.
The role also involves supporting personal care routines, promoting independence, and ensuring the safety and dignity of all pupils. You must be calm under pressure, confident supporting challenging behaviour, and committed to building trusting relationships with students who may struggle to communicate verbally.
The ideal candidate will:
Have experience supporting children or young people with SEN, autism, or physical disabilities (professional or personal)
Be comfortable supporting wheelchair users and personal care needs
Demonstrate patience, resilience, and strong communication skills
Be reliable, proactive, and eager to learn
Hold (or be willing to obtain) an enhanced DBS
Tradewind Recruitment offers excellent rates of pay, ongoing CPD training, and dedicated consultant support.
