Job Description

Forest School Teacher (Qualified or Unqualified) | Burnley AP

Location: Burnley, Lancashire (Outdoor/Woodland Sites) Salary: TBC (Dependent on experience/QTS) Contract: Full-Time, Permanent Start Date: As soon as possible / Summer Term 2026 and beyond.

The Role: Education Beyond the Classroom

Are you a nature-lover who believes that the best lessons happen under a canopy of trees? Our Alternative Provision (AP) in Burnley is seeking a visionary Forest School Teacher to lead our outdoor learning program.

We work with young people who find the traditional classroom challenging. In this role, you won't just be teaching; you'll be building confidence, resilience, and emotional regulation through bushcraft, fire lighting, tool use, and environmental art in the local Burnley woodlands.

Key Responsibilities

  • Outdoor Curriculum: Design and deliver a "Forest School" program tailored to students with SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs.

  • Alternative Provision (AP) Support: Use nature-based therapy to re-engage learners with education.

  • Safety & Risk Management: Conduct dynamic risk assessments for outdoor activities, ensuring a safe yet adventurous environment.

  • Burnley Community Impact: Utilise local green spaces to foster a sense of belonging and environmental stewardship.

What We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from Qualified Teachers (QTS), Forest School Level 3 Practitioners, or Unqualified Teachers with significant outdoor education experience.

  • Passion for AP: A genuine desire to work with "hard to reach" young people in an Alternative Provision setting.

  • Outdoor Skills: Experience in bushcraft, woodworking, or conservation.

  • Resilience: The ability to work outdoors in all Lancashire weathers (rain or shine!) and manage challenging behaviour with empathy.

  • Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the Burnley area and its natural landscape.

Why Join Our Burnley Forest School?

  • The "Office": Swap a whiteboard for a woodland.

  • Professional Growth: We offer funded Level 3 Forest School Leader training for the right unqualified candidate.

  • Well-being Centered: A school culture that prioritises the mental health of both staff and students.

  • Autonomy: The freedom to shape a curriculum that follows the interests of the learners.
