Mental Health Specialist Teaching Assistant

We are currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Specialist Teaching Assistant to work within a supportive educational setting through Tradewind Recruitment. This is a rewarding opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting young people experiencing mental health challenges and helping them engage positively with education.

As a Mental Health Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who require additional emotional, behavioural, and pastoral support within the classroom and around the school. You will play a vital role in creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where students feel understood and able to succeed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to students experiencing mental health challenges

  • Support students with emotional regulation, wellbeing, and engagement in learning

  • Build positive and trusting relationships with students to help them feel safe and supported

  • Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams, and SEN staff to support individual learning plans

  • Help implement strategies that support positive behaviour and emotional resilience

  • Assist in creating a calm and structured classroom environment

  • Monitor student progress and report any concerns to relevant staff members

  • Support students during transitions, break times, and challenging situations when needed

Requirements

  • Previous experience supporting individuals with mental health needs is essential

  • Experience may include work in schools, alternative provision, youth work, residential care, counselling settings, or mental health support services

  • Understanding of social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs

  • Strong communication, empathy, and relationship-building skills

  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and supportive in challenging situations

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting student wellbeing
