Mental Health Specialist Teaching Assistant

We are currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Specialist Teaching Assistant to work within a supportive educational setting through Tradewind Recruitment. This is a rewarding opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting young people experiencing mental health challenges and helping them engage positively with education.
As a Mental Health Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who require additional emotional, behavioural, and pastoral support within the classroom and around the school. You will play a vital role in creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where students feel understood and able to succeed.
Key Responsibilities
Provide 1:1 and small group support to students experiencing mental health challenges
Support students with emotional regulation, wellbeing, and engagement in learning
Build positive and trusting relationships with students to help them feel safe and supported
Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams, and SEN staff to support individual learning plans
Help implement strategies that support positive behaviour and emotional resilience
Assist in creating a calm and structured classroom environment
Monitor student progress and report any concerns to relevant staff members
Support students during transitions, break times, and challenging situations when needed
Requirements
Previous experience supporting individuals with mental health needs is essential
Experience may include work in schools, alternative provision, youth work, residential care, counselling settings, or mental health support services
Understanding of social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs
Strong communication, empathy, and relationship-building skills
Ability to remain calm, patient, and supportive in challenging situations
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting student wellbeing
