Job Description

Contract: Full-Time, Term-Time Only (Temp-to-Perm available)

The Role

Are you an empathetic and resilient individual looking to support student well-being in a Preston secondary school? We are seeking a Pastoral Support & Cover Officer to join our team this May.

This is a versatile role designed for someone who can manage a classroom during short-term teacher absences while also acting as a key mentor for students requiring social and emotional support. You will be the "go-to" person for maintaining a positive school culture, ensuring that every student feels safe, heard, and ready to learn.

Key Responsibilities

  • Classroom Supervision: Provide high-quality cover for pre-set lessons, maintaining behaviour standards and ensuring students remain on task.

  • Pastoral Care: Act as a first point of contact for students experiencing behavioural or emotional difficulties during the day.

  • Student Mentoring: Deliver 1:1 or small group interventions to support students with attendance, confidence, or social skills.

  • Safeguarding: Work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and Heads of Year to identify and support vulnerable learners.

  • Community Liaison: Build strong relationships with parents and carers to resolve student issues and celebrate successes.

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience: Previous experience in a school, youth work, or a similar pastoral setting is highly valued.

  • Communication: The ability to de-escalate situations and speak with students in a way that builds mutual respect.

  • Qualifications: While a degree is not mandatory, Level 2/3 qualifications in Youth Work, Education, or Social Care are a significant advantage.

  • Local Commitment: A professional who wants to make a long-term impact on the Preston community.

Why Join Our Preston Team?

  • Competitive Pay: We offer a salary aligned with the latest 2026 UK pastoral pay scales.

  • Progression: For the right candidate, this "Temp-to-Perm" role offers a direct pathway to a permanent contract and further training in school leadership.

  • Impact: You will be joining a school that prioritises staff well-being as much as student success.

How to Apply

We are interviewing throughout late April for a May 2026 start. Please submit your CV and a brief cover letter highlighting your experience in student support.
