Tradewind Recruitment is looking to recruit Behaviour Support Assistants, Behaviour Mentors and experienced education support professionals for opportunities across secondary schools in St Helens.

We work closely with partner secondary schools throughout the borough and are keen to hear from individuals who can provide consistent, positive and effective support to pupils who require additional help managing their behaviour, emotions and engagement with education.

Opportunities may include long-term Behaviour Support Assistant positions, fixed-term assignments and ongoing school-based support roles, depending on individual school requirements.

The Role

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will work alongside teaching staff, pastoral teams and SEND professionals to help pupils access education and develop positive relationships within school.

Depending on the school and individual position, responsibilities may include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group behaviour support
  • Supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs
  • Helping pupils regulate their emotions and manage challenging situations
  • Supporting pupils with SEND and additional learning needs
  • Implementing individual behaviour support strategies
  • Encouraging positive engagement with learning
  • Helping pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence
  • Working alongside classroom teachers and pastoral staff
  • Supporting pupils during transitions and difficult periods of the school day
  • Building positive, professional relationships with pupils
  • Promoting a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment

These roles require patience, consistency and the ability to remain calm when supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour.

The Ideal Candidate

Successful applicants will ideally demonstrate:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people
  • Experience supporting challenging behaviour or additional needs
  • An understanding of SEND and SEMH
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A calm, patient and consistent approach
  • The ability to establish clear boundaries
  • Confidence using positive behaviour management strategies
  • The ability to build trusting professional relationships
  • A commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
  • Reliability and professionalism

Experience working in a secondary school is desirable, but candidates from relevant youth support, care and mentoring backgrounds are also encouraged to apply.

Important Applicant Information

Applicants must currently be based in the UK, have the right to work in the UK and be able to work in schools across St Helens.

Previous experience working with children or young people is essential. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate relevant behaviour support, mentoring, SEND or SEMH experience.
