Tradewind Recruitment are currently looking for a compassionate, resilient and experienced Mental Health Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) school in the Corby area.
We are looking for someone who has a strong understanding of mental health and experience supporting children or young people who may struggle with emotional regulation, challenging behaviour, anxiety, trauma or difficulties engaging with education.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to make a genuine difference to young people's lives, helping them develop confidence, manage their emotions and build positive relationships.
The position offers a 12-week temp-to-perm pathway, providing the opportunity to progress into a permanent role with the school, subject to a successful placement.
The Role
As a Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you will:
Provide 1:1 and small-group support to students with SEMH needs
Support young people experiencing mental health and emotional wellbeing difficulties
Help students develop emotional regulation and positive coping strategies
Manage challenging behaviour using appropriate de-escalation techniques
Build positive, trusting relationships with students who may have experienced trauma or difficulties in education
Support students with anxiety, low confidence and barriers to learning
Encourage positive behaviour, independence and resilience
Provide consistent routines, boundaries and reassurance
Support students within lessons and during targeted interventions
Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams and safeguarding staff
Help create a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment
Who Are We Looking For?
We are particularly interested in candidates who have previous experience supporting young people with mental health needs, SEMH or challenging behaviour.
Relevant experience could include:
SEMH schools or alternative provision
SEN/SEND support
Mental health support work
Behaviour support or mentoring
Teaching Assistant or Learning Support roles
Children's residential care
Youth work
Pastoral support
Social care
Psychology or counselling
Healthcare or support work
The Ideal Candidate Will:
Have a strong understanding of mental health and how it can affect behaviour and learning
Be confident supporting young people with complex emotional needs
Understand the importance of trauma-informed and individualised approaches
Have experience managing challenging situations calmly and professionally
Be patient, empathetic and emotionally resilient
Be confident establishing clear and consistent boundaries
Have strong communication and relationship-building skills
Be passionate about supporting vulnerable young people
Be available for full-time work in Corby
Previous experience within an SEMH school would be beneficial, but we also welcome applications from individuals with relevant mental health, behaviour support or care experience.
