Tradewind Recruitment are currently seeking an enthusiastic, resilient and compassionate Mental Health Teaching Assistant to join a specialist Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) school in the Corby area.
We are looking for someone who has a strong understanding of mental health and emotional wellbeing, alongside experience supporting young people who may display challenging behaviour, struggle with emotional regulation or have experienced trauma.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building relationships with young people and understands the importance of providing a calm, consistent and supportive environment.
The position is full-time and offers a 12-week temp-to-perm opportunity, with the potential to secure a permanent position within the school following a successful placement.
Your Responsibilities
As a Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you will:
Provide 1:1 and small-group support to students with SEMH needs
Support young people with their mental health, emotional wellbeing and behaviour
Help students manage their emotions and develop positive coping strategies
Use appropriate behaviour management and de-escalation techniques
Build positive and trusting relationships with students
Support students who may experience anxiety, trauma or difficulties engaging with education
Encourage confidence, independence and emotional resilience
Maintain clear and consistent boundaries
Help students overcome barriers to learning and re-engage with education
Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and other support professionals
Contribute to a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment
What We're Looking For
We are particularly interested in candidates who have previous experience supporting children or young people with mental health needs, SEMH or challenging behaviour.
Relevant experience could include:
SEMH schools or alternative provision
SEN/SEND support
Mental health support work
Behaviour support or mentoring
Teaching Assistant or Learning Support roles
Children's residential care
Youth work
Pastoral support
Social care
Psychology or counselling
Healthcare or support work
The Ideal Candidate Will:
Have a strong understanding of mental health and how it can impact young people's behaviour and learning
Be confident supporting students with complex emotional and behavioural needs
Understand the importance of patience, empathy and consistency
Have experience managing challenging situations calmly and professionally
Be confident using positive behaviour management strategies
Be able to establish clear boundaries while building trusting relationships
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Be committed to supporting vulnerable young people
Be available for full-time work in Corby
Previous experience within an SEMH school would be advantageous, although candidates with relevant experience in mental health, behaviour support, care or youth work are also encouraged to apply.
