Job Description

Psychology Graduates: Teaching Assistant Opportunities in Bury

Tradewind Recruitment | Primary School Roles | Full-Time Opportunities

Ready to put your Psychology degree into practice?

Are you a Psychology graduate interested in how children learn, develop and navigate challenges in the classroom? Looking to gain practical experience before pursuing further study or a career working with children and young people?

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking motivated graduates to work as Teaching Assistants in primary schools across Bury and the surrounding areas. These positions provide an opportunity to gain first-hand experience supporting pupils, understanding individual learning needs and contributing to a positive school environment.

Whether your long-term ambitions involve teaching, educational psychology, child development or mental health and wellbeing, a role in a primary school could be a valuable starting point.

Locations across Bury and the surrounding areas

We work with primary schools in a variety of local communities, including:

Bury, Ramsbottom, Prestwich, Radcliffe, Whitefield, Tottington and nearby areas.

With opportunities across different school settings, you can gain experience supporting pupils with a range of abilities, backgrounds and learning needs.

What types of roles are available?

We recruit graduates for a range of positions depending on each school's requirements, including:

  • Teaching Assistant - General Classroom Support: Assist the class teacher with learning activities, pupil engagement and everyday classroom routines.

  • 1:1 Pupil Support: Work closely with individual children who need additional help to access the curriculum and develop confidence.

  • SEND Support: Help pupils with special educational needs and disabilities participate in school life and work towards their individual learning goals.

  • SEMH & Behaviour Support: Support children who experience emotional regulation difficulties, behavioural challenges or barriers to engagement.

  • Additional Needs Provision: Work alongside school staff to provide more targeted support for pupils requiring a tailored approach.

Most vacancies are full-time, Monday to Friday, with typical hours of 8:30am-3:30pm.

Why consider a school-based role after Psychology?

Your degree may have introduced you to topics such as child development, cognition, behaviour and emotional wellbeing. Working in a school gives you the opportunity to build on this academic knowledge through direct experience with children.

These positions can be particularly useful for graduates who want to explore their interests before committing to further training or postgraduate study.

Benefits include:

  • Developing practical experience working with primary-aged children.

  • Building skills in communication, behaviour support and relationship-building.

  • Learning how schools support pupils with additional educational needs.

  • Strengthening relevant experience for future PGCE or teacher training applications.

  • Exploring potential career paths in education, child development and related support services.

Interested in becoming a qualified teacher? Some of the trusts we work with offer their own School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programmes. Depending on the programme's entry requirements and available opportunities, this could offer a route towards future teacher training.

What are we looking for?

We welcome applications from Psychology graduates and candidates with related degrees who are enthusiastic about working in primary education.

Ideally, you will have:

  • A degree in Psychology or a relevant subject.

  • Previous experience working with children or young people, whether through employment, volunteering, mentoring or tutoring.

  • An interest in SEND, child development, emotional wellbeing or behaviour support.

  • A patient, adaptable and proactive approach.

  • A genuine commitment to helping children feel supported and achieve their potential.

Experience supporting pupils with additional needs is advantageous, although we are happy to speak with graduates looking to build their school-based experience.
