About the Role

Tradewind Recruitment is partnering with a forward-thinking and supportive Alternative Provision (AP) in the Burnley area. They are looking for an energetic, resilient, and passionate Outdoor Education Teacher / Instructor to join their team right after the October half-term.

This role is designed for educators who want to step outside traditional classrooms and use practical, land-based, and outdoor activities to re-engage young people who have struggled with mainstream education. You will work with students presenting with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them build confidence, trust, resilience, and essential life skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, hands-on outdoor education and activity sessions tailored to disengaged youth.

  • Manage student behaviour proactively using a calm, trauma-informed approach and positive de-escalation strategies.

  • Conduct rigorous risk assessments and maintain health and safety standards across all outdoor activities and varying weather conditions.

  • Act as a positive mentor and role model, fostering a safe environment where students feel valued and supported.

  • Track individual student engagement, emotional growth, and practical milestones, reporting progress back to the leadership team.

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS / QTLS) or a strong background as an Unqualified Teacher, Youth Worker, Sports Coach, or experienced Outdoor Activity Leader.

  • Experience: Proven experience working within an Alternative Provision (AP), Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), or supporting youth with SEMH/challenging behaviours.

  • Skills: Excellent behaviour management, patience, resilience, and a natural ability to build trust quickly with hard-to-reach teens.

  • Compliance: Enhanced DBS certificate on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one immediately) and checkable work references.

Why Join Through Tradewind?

  • Work-Life Balance: Sociable school hours with weekends and school holidays off.

  • Meaningful Impact: Make a visible, daily difference in the lives of vulnerable young people who need alternative pathways to succeed.

  • Professional Development: Access to ongoing training, dedicated consultant support, and competitive rates of pay.
