Government unveils updated teacher pay scales

2019-10-08

Updated teacher and school leadership pay scales for the current academic year have been finalised by the Department for Education.

The new pay scale figures are applicable from 1 September 2019 and reflect the 2.75% increase that was suggested by the DfE in July this year.

All local authority-maintained schools must follow the updated pay rates, although free schools and academies can decide to set their own levels as they see fit.

The pay scales vary geographically, with greater and central London having different pay rates to the rest of England and Wales.

Teacher pay scales

Teachers across the country can now expect to earn between £17,682 and £27,965 on the regular pay range, between £23,373 and £35,971 on the main pay range and from £37,654 to £40,480 if they are in the upper pay range.

Leading practitioners can expect to have a salary anywhere between £41,267 and £62,735.

In outer London, those figures rise to a minimum of £21,004 and a maximum of £31,290 on the regular scale, to £28,355 and £40,035 on the main pay range and to £41,419 and £44,541 in the upper pay range.

Again, staff classed as leading practitioners can expect to earn between £44,541 and £66,012.

The pay scales for inner London are higher still, with the regular pay range having a minimum of £22,237 and a maximum of £32,515.

Those on the main and upper pay scales in the central part of the capital can expect to earn between £30,480 and £41,483 and £45,713 and £49,571 respectively, with leading practitioners earning from £49,065 up to £70,540.
