Cover Supervisor - Alternative Provision (Preston)

Location: Preston, Lancashire (PR1/PR2)

Salary: £100 - £144.89 per day (Dependent on experience)

Contract: Full-Time, Term Time Only

Start Date: ASAP / September 2026

The Role

Are you a confident, adaptable, and resilient individual looking to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable young people? A leading Alternative Provision in Preston is seeking a dedicated Cover Supervisor to join their team.

Unlike a mainstream setting, our AP supports students who have faced barriers to education, including SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs and challenging behaviours. As a Cover Supervisor, you won't just be "babysitting" a class; you will be a mentor, a stabiliser, and a consistent face for students who need it most.

Key Responsibilities

  • Classroom Management: Lead whole-class sessions across various subjects using pre-set work, ensuring a calm and productive learning environment.

  • Behavior Support: Implement the school's therapeutic behaviour policy, using de-escalation techniques to manage high-anxiety situations.

  • Student Engagement: Build strong rapport with students to encourage participation and minimise disruption.

  • Adaptability: Move flexibly between different subject areas and age groups (KS3 & KS4) as required by the school's daily needs.

Requirements

  • Experience: Previous experience as a Cover Supervisor, Sports Coach, Youth Worker, or Teaching Assistant is essential.

  • Character: You must be thick-skinned, patient, and able to remain calm under pressure.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal communication skills to navigate complex social dynamics with students.

  • Availability: Ability to work 8:30 am - 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

Why Work at This Alternative Provision?

  • Small Class Sizes: Work with smaller groups (typically 6-8 students) compared to mainstream schools.

  • Professional Growth: Excellent stepping stone for those considering a career in teaching or educational psychology.

  • Team Environment: Work alongside a highly supportive team of specialist teachers and pastoral staff.

  • Competitive Pay: Weekly pay via PAYE with access to a pension scheme.
