Lead Design Technician - Secondary School (Design & Technology Department)

Location: Northampton

Are you an experienced Design Technician looking to take the next step in your career? Do you have a strong technical background and the leadership skills to support a busy and successful Design & Technology department?

We are working in partnership with a well-established secondary school in Northampton that is seeking a Lead Design Technician to join its Design & Technology team from September 2026. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced technician to take responsibility for the day-to-day management of workshops, resources, and technical support across the department.

The school is ideally looking to make a permanent appointment, although fixed-term arrangements will be considered for the right candidate.

About the Role:

  • Lead and coordinate technical support across the Design & Technology department
  • Prepare, organise, and maintain materials, equipment, tools, and machinery for practical lessons
  • Support teaching staff and students during practical activities and demonstrations
  • Oversee the maintenance, servicing, and safe operation of workshop equipment
  • Manage stock levels, budgets, ordering processes, and resource allocation
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, risk assessments, and COSHH requirements
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and maintain accurate records
  • Support GCSE and A-Level practical assessments, coursework projects, and departmental events
  • Assist in developing workshop systems and procedures to ensure efficient departmental operations
  • Provide guidance and support to other technicians where appropriate

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Previous experience working as a Design Technician, Senior Technician, or in a similar technical role
  • Strong practical knowledge of workshop equipment, machinery, materials, and manufacturing processes
  • Excellent understanding of health and safety procedures within a workshop environment
  • Highly organised with strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Able to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Experience within an educational setting is desirable but not essential
  • Relevant technical qualifications or industry experience would be advantageous
