Student Support Mentor - Alternative Provision Schools, Northamptonshire

Tradewind Recruitment is looking for resilient, caring, and proactive Student Support Workers to support pupils in Alternative Provision schools across Northamptonshire.

This is a rewarding opportunity for individuals with experience supporting children and young people who may have faced barriers to education, experienced trauma, or require additional behavioural, emotional, and social support. Pupils in Alternative Provision settings may have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, or behaviour that can be challenging.

As a Student Support Mentor, you will play an important role in helping pupils feel safe, understood, and ready to engage in education. You will work alongside teachers, pastoral teams, SEN staff, and other professionals to provide consistent support throughout the school day.

The role will involve:

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support to pupils in Alternative Provision settings.
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with children and young people.
  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour management, and conflict resolution.
  • Encouraging engagement in learning, routines, enrichment activities, and wider school life.
  • Supporting pupils during lessons, transitions, breaktimes, and off-site activities where required.
  • Using de-escalation techniques and a calm, consistent approach when responding to challenging behaviour.
  • Promoting independence, confidence, communication skills, and positive choices.
  • Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff, SENCOs, and external professionals.
  • Maintaining accurate records and following safeguarding, behaviour, and school policies at all times.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has previous experience as a Student Support Mentor Care Worker, Youth Worker, Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Mentor, Support Worker, or in a similar role.
  • Has experience supporting children or young people with SEND, SEMH needs, trauma, challenging behaviour, or complex needs.
  • Is proactive, reliable, patient, and able to use their own initiative.
  • Can remain calm and professional in challenging or unpredictable situations.
  • Has strong communication skills and can build effective relationships with pupils, colleagues, and families.
  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Is flexible and willing to work across a range of Alternative Provision schools in Northamptonshire.
