Teaching Assistant - ASC/SLD Specialist Schools (Northamptonshire)

Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)? We are currently recruiting calm, consistent, and dedicated Teaching Assistants to work across specialist schools in Northamptonshire, supporting students with a range of additional needs.

In this role, you will be working with pupils who may be high-functioning autistic, non-verbal, or selectively mute, and who require tailored support with speech, communication, and social interaction. Many students benefit from structured environments and sensory-based approaches to learning, and you will play a key role in helping to create a safe, predictable, and supportive setting where they can thrive.

You will support students on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, helping them to access learning, develop communication skills, and regulate their emotions. This may include using visual aids, communication tools (such as PECS or Makaton), and implementing sensory strategies to meet individual needs.

The ideal candidate will have either professional or personal experience supporting individuals with autism or additional needs. Patience, empathy, and a calm, consistent approach are essential, along with a genuine passion for supporting students who may communicate and learn in different ways.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting students with ASC and SLD in classroom and specialist settings
  • Assisting with speech, language, and communication development
  • Providing structured routines and clear expectations
  • Implementing sensory strategies to support regulation and engagement
  • Working closely with teachers, therapists, and SEN staff
