Functional Skills Tutor - Alternative Provision

A specialist Alternative Provision in Towcester is seeking a dedicated Functional Skills Tutor to join their team on a full-time, permanent basis from March 2026. This provision supports secondary-aged students who have been permanently excluded from mainstream schools, giving them structure, support, and a genuine second chance to succeed.

As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will work closely with students to deliver essential English and/or Maths skills, helping them achieve nationally recognised qualifications while fostering self-belief and independence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver Functional Skills lessons in English, Maths, or combined programmes (Entry Level to Level 2)

  • Plan and adapt engaging lessons to suit individual student needs and abilities

  • Support students in preparing for assessments and functional skills qualifications

  • Provide practical, real-world examples to make learning relevant and accessible

  • Track and monitor student progress, providing constructive feedback

  • Offer targeted interventions for students who require extra support

  • Maintain a structured and positive learning environment, promoting confidence and resilience

  • Collaborate with teachers, pastoral staff, and senior leaders to support holistic student development

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Qualified Teacher (QTS/QTLS) or experienced Functional Skills Tutor

  • Strong subject knowledge in English, Maths, or both

  • Experience supporting students with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, or disrupted education

  • Ability to make lessons engaging, practical, and relevant

  • Patient, adaptable, and confident in managing classroom behaviour

  • Committed to supporting young people who need a second chance

  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures (or willingness to undertake training)
