SEMH Teaching Assistant / Cover Supervisor

Tradewind Recruitment are looking for an experienced and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant / Cover Supervisor to work within a specialist educational setting supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who have a strong understanding of mental health and experience supporting young people who may display challenging behaviour, struggle with emotional regulation or face barriers to engaging with education.

This role would suit someone who is resilient, patient and confident building positive relationships with young people who require consistency, understanding and clear boundaries.

The Role

Depending on your experience, your responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting students with a range of SEMH and mental health needs

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support

  • Supervising classes and delivering pre-planned lessons

  • Supporting students with emotional regulation and behaviour

  • Helping young people re-engage with learning

  • Building positive and trusting relationships with students

  • Using appropriate de-escalation strategies when situations become challenging

  • Providing consistent boundaries and expectations

  • Supporting students with anxiety, low confidence and other barriers to learning

  • Working closely with teaching, pastoral and safeguarding teams

  • Creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment

Who Are We Looking For?

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with experience in areas such as:

  • SEMH schools or alternative provision

  • SEN/SEND support

  • Mental health support

  • Teaching Assistant or Learning Support roles

  • Cover Supervisor work

  • Behaviour support or mentoring

  • Youth work

  • Children's residential care

  • Social care

  • Pastoral support

  • Counselling or Psychology-related backgrounds

You will ideally have a good understanding of mental health and how this can impact a young person's behaviour, relationships and ability to engage with education.

The right candidate will be calm, resilient and empathetic while also being confident establishing clear and consistent boundaries.
