Job Description
Mental Health & Behaviour Support Assistant - Corby
Location: Corby, Northamptonshire
Contract: Full-Time | Long-Term | Potential to Become Permanent
Salary: Competitive daily rates, dependent on experience
Agency: Tradewind Recruitment
Do You Have Experience Supporting Young People with Mental Health or Behavioural Needs?
Tradewind Recruitment are currently recruiting a compassionate, resilient and dedicated Mental Health & Behaviour Support Assistant to work within a specialist educational setting in the Corby area.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children and young people who experience social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties, helping them overcome challenges, develop positive relationships and feel more confident within education.
We are looking for individuals who understand that behaviour is often a form of communication and who can provide the patience, consistency and emotional support that vulnerable young people need.
The school supports pupils who may have experienced trauma, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, challenging behaviour or difficulties engaging with mainstream education.
You do not necessarily need previous experience as a Teaching Assistant. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with experience in mental health, SEN, youth work, care, behaviour support or other roles involving vulnerable children and young people.
The Role
As a Mental Health & Behaviour Support Assistant, you will play an important role in supporting pupils' emotional wellbeing, behaviour and engagement with learning.
Your responsibilities will include:
Providing one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.
Supporting young people who may experience anxiety, trauma, emotional distress or difficulties regulating their emotions.
Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced challenging circumstances.
Supporting students who display behaviours that challenge, using calm, consistent and positive approaches.
Helping pupils recognise, understand and manage their emotions.
Using trauma-informed approaches to create a safe and supportive learning environment.
Supporting pupils with additional needs, including ADHD, autism and behavioural difficulties.
Encouraging positive behaviour, healthy relationships and improved communication skills.
Helping young people develop resilience, confidence, independence and coping strategies.
Supporting pupils who may struggle to engage with classroom learning or maintain positive routines.
Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff and SEN professionals to provide consistent support.
Following individual behaviour plans, support strategies and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Supporting pupils during challenging situations and using appropriate de-escalation techniques.
Promoting safeguarding, emotional wellbeing and a positive school environment.
What Are We Looking For?
We would love to hear from candidates who:
Have experience supporting children or young people with mental health, emotional or behavioural needs.
Have a good understanding of SEMH, trauma, anxiety or challenging behaviour.
Are confident building relationships with young people who may find it difficult to trust others.
Can remain calm, patient and professional in challenging situations.
Understand the importance of consistency, boundaries and positive behaviour support.
Are empathetic, resilient and genuinely passionate about helping vulnerable young people.
Have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Can work effectively as part of a wider school and pastoral support team.
Are reliable, adaptable and committed to making a positive difference.
Are available for full-time work in the Corby area.
Relevant Experience
We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants with backgrounds in:
Mental health support and mental health services.
SEMH and SEN education.
Behaviour mentoring and pastoral support.
Youth work and youth offending services.
Residential childcare and children's homes.
Learning disability support.
Social care and family support.
Alternative provision and specialist education.
Psychology or related fields, alongside relevant practical experience.

Previous experience within an SEMH school would be advantageous, but it is not essential if you have relevant experience supporting vulnerable young people.
