Job Description
Emotional Wellbeing & Mental Health Teaching Assistant - Corby
Location: Corby, Northamptonshire
Contract: Full-Time | Long-Term | Potential Temp-to-Perm Opportunity
Salary: Competitive daily rates, dependent on experience
Agency: Tradewind Recruitment
Could You Make a Difference to a Young Person's Mental Health and Education?
Tradewind Recruitment are currently looking for a compassionate, patient and dedicated Emotional Wellbeing & Mental Health Teaching Assistant to support young people within a specialist educational setting in Corby.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who has experience working with individuals with mental health difficulties, emotional needs or challenging behaviour and wants to make a genuine difference within education.
The school supports young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, many of whom have experienced significant challenges that can affect their confidence, behaviour, relationships and ability to engage with learning.
We are looking for someone who understands that every young person is different and that building trust, offering consistency and recognising the reasons behind behaviour can be just as important as academic support.
You will be working alongside experienced teaching and pastoral staff to help students feel safe, supported and encouraged to achieve their potential.
You don't necessarily need previous school experience. If you have worked in mental health services, residential care, youth work, therapeutic support or a similar environment, we would love to hear from you.
What Will Your Role Involve?
As an Emotional Wellbeing & Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you will:
Provide one-to-one and small-group support to young people with SEMH needs.
Support students experiencing anxiety, trauma-related difficulties, emotional dysregulation and behavioural challenges.
Develop positive, trusting relationships with students who may struggle to engage with education.
Help young people recognise and manage their emotions in a safe and supportive environment.
Use appropriate behaviour management and de-escalation strategies when students become distressed.
Encourage students to participate in lessons and develop positive attitudes towards learning.
Provide emotional reassurance, encouragement and consistent support throughout the school day.
Work with students who may have additional needs, including autism, ADHD and associated learning difficulties.
Support the development of confidence, resilience, independence and social skills.
Recognise potential triggers and adapt your approach to meet individual needs.
Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams and other professionals.
Follow individual support plans and behaviour strategies to ensure students receive consistent care.
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries while demonstrating empathy and understanding.
Monitor student engagement and share relevant observations with teaching staff.
Promote positive relationships, inclusion and emotional wellbeing.
Follow safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure the safety and welfare of all students.
Who Would Be Suitable for This Role?
We are particularly interested in candidates who have a strong understanding of mental health and experience supporting people with emotional, behavioural or additional needs.
The ideal candidate will:
Have experience working with vulnerable children, young people or individuals with mental health needs.
Understand how trauma, anxiety and emotional difficulties can affect behaviour and learning.
Be confident supporting young people who may display challenging or distressed behaviour.
Have a calm, patient and empathetic approach.
Be able to build positive relationships with young people who may find it difficult to trust others.
Understand the importance of clear boundaries, consistency and positive reinforcement.
Be resilient and able to respond professionally to challenging situations.
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Be passionate about supporting emotional wellbeing and personal development.
Work effectively as part of a team and follow guidance from teaching and pastoral staff.
Be reliable, adaptable and committed to making a positive difference.

If you have supported people with emotional difficulties, mental health needs or challenging behaviour, your experience could be extremely valuable within this role.
Why Is This Role So Rewarding?
For some young people, attending school and engaging with education can be incredibly challenging.
They may have experienced trauma, struggled with their mental health or found it difficult to build positive relationships with adults and peers.
As a Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you could be the person who helps a student feel understood, encourages them to try again after a difficult day or supports them in developing the confidence to achieve something they previously thought was impossible.
Progress isn't always measured by academic results. Sometimes, helping a young person manage their emotions, participate in a lesson or develop a positive relationship is an equally important achievement.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference while developing your experience within specialist education and mental health support.
