Location: Corby, Northamptonshire
Job Type: Full-Time | Long-Term | Potential Permanent Opportunities
Salary: Competitive daily rates, dependent on experience
Recruitment Agency: Tradewind Recruitment

Do You Have Experience Supporting Young People with Mental Health or Challenging Behaviour?

Multiple positions available - we want to hear from experienced and passionate support professionals!

Tradewind Recruitment are currently recruiting for several SEMH Behaviour & Mental Health Support Workers to join a specialist educational setting in Corby.

We are looking for individuals who have a genuine understanding of mental health, emotional wellbeing and challenging behaviour, and who are passionate about helping vulnerable young people overcome barriers to learning.

These opportunities would be particularly suited to candidates with experience in mental health services, children's residential care, SEMH education, therapeutic support, youth work or behaviour intervention.

The students you will be supporting may have experienced trauma, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, attachment difficulties or other social, emotional and mental health challenges.

We need people who can see beyond challenging behaviour, understand that every young person has different needs and provide the patience, consistency and encouragement required to help them succeed.

If you're experienced in supporting vulnerable young people and are looking for a rewarding new opportunity, we would love to speak with you.

What Does the Role Involve?

Working within a specialist school, you will play a key role in supporting students' emotional wellbeing, behaviour and engagement with education.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support to students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

  • Supporting young people who experience anxiety, trauma-related difficulties, emotional dysregulation and challenging behaviour.

  • Building strong, positive relationships with students who may struggle to trust adults or engage with education.

  • Recognising triggers and using appropriate de-escalation strategies to support students during difficult situations.

  • Helping young people develop emotional regulation skills, resilience and positive coping strategies.

  • Supporting students to access classroom learning and participate in educational activities.

  • Working alongside teachers and pastoral staff to implement individual behaviour support plans.

  • Supporting students with additional needs, including autism, ADHD and associated learning difficulties.

  • Encouraging positive communication, social interaction and healthy relationships.

  • Providing reassurance, guidance and consistent boundaries throughout the school day.

  • Helping students develop confidence, independence and a sense of achievement.

  • Monitoring student progress, behaviour and emotional wellbeing.

  • Maintaining a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

  • Following safeguarding policies and promoting the welfare of vulnerable young people.

What Experience Are We Looking For?

We are particularly keen to speak with candidates who have hands-on experience supporting individuals with mental health difficulties, emotional needs or behaviours that challenge.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have previous experience working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals with SEMH, mental health or behavioural needs.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of how trauma and emotional difficulties can affect behaviour.

  • Be confident responding to challenging situations in a calm, professional and supportive manner.

  • Have experience using positive behaviour management or de-escalation strategies.

  • Understand the importance of building trust, maintaining boundaries and providing consistency.

  • Be patient, resilient, empathetic and emotionally aware.

  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Be confident working collaboratively with teaching staff and other professionals.

  • Be committed to safeguarding and promoting young people's wellbeing.

  • Have a genuine passion for helping students who may have experienced difficulties within mainstream education.

Previous experience working in a school is desirable but not essential. Relevant experience supporting vulnerable people in other settings will also be considered.

We Are Particularly Interested in Candidates From the Following Backgrounds:

  • SEMH Teaching Assistants - with experience supporting students with social, emotional and mental health needs.

  • Mental Health Support Workers - experienced in supporting individuals with emotional or psychological difficulties.

  • Children's Residential Support Workers - confident supporting young people with complex emotional and behavioural needs.

  • Behaviour Mentors - experienced in positive behaviour management, intervention and de-escalation.

  • Youth Workers - with experience mentoring and supporting vulnerable young people.

  • Therapeutic Support Workers - familiar with trauma-informed and relationship-based approaches.

  • SEN Teaching Assistants - experienced in supporting autism, ADHD and associated emotional or behavioural needs.

  • Psychology Graduates - with relevant practical experience supporting mental health, behaviour or additional needs.

  • Pastoral Support Workers - experienced in student wellbeing, emotional support and safeguarding.

If your background is in mental health, care or youth support rather than education, we would still encourage you to apply.

Why Consider a Career in SEMH Education?

Working with young people who have experienced emotional and behavioural challenges can be demanding, but it can also be incredibly rewarding.

You may be supporting a student who struggles to manage their emotions, helping someone rebuild their confidence or encouraging a young person to engage with education after a difficult experience.

Sometimes the smallest achievements can make the biggest difference.

This is an opportunity to use your existing skills and experience in an environment where your support can have a genuine, lasting impact.

With multiple vacancies available, we are keen to speak with individuals who are ready to commit to a rewarding, long-term opportunity.
