Job Description

SEMH & Mental Health Support Assistant - Corby

Location: Corby, Northamptonshire
Contract: Full-Time | Long-Term | Potential Permanent Opportunity
Salary: Competitive daily rates, dependent on experience
Agency: Tradewind Recruitment

Do You Have Experience Supporting Young People with Mental Health or Behavioural Needs?

Tradewind Recruitment are looking for a caring, enthusiastic and resilient SEMH & Mental Health Support Assistant to join a specialist educational setting in Corby.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about mental health and wants to make a meaningful difference to young people who need additional emotional, behavioural and educational support.

The school works with students who may experience a range of social, emotional and mental health difficulties, including anxiety, trauma-related challenges, emotional dysregulation and difficulties managing their behaviour.

We are particularly interested in candidates who understand the importance of building trust, creating a sense of safety and recognising the reasons behind challenging behaviour.

You don't necessarily need to have worked in a school before. If you have experience supporting vulnerable young people or individuals with mental health needs in another setting, your skills could be extremely valuable.

What Will You Be Doing?

As an SEMH & Mental Health Support Assistant, you will:

  • Support students with social, emotional and mental health needs on a one-to-one basis and in small groups.

  • Help young people manage their emotions, develop coping strategies and build resilience.

  • Build positive and trusting relationships with students who may find traditional educational environments challenging.

  • Support students who may display distressed, withdrawn or challenging behaviour.

  • Use positive behaviour management and de-escalation techniques to maintain a calm and supportive environment.

  • Encourage students to engage with lessons, activities and their wider education.

  • Recognise individual triggers and adapt your approach to meet students' emotional and behavioural needs.

  • Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and other professionals to provide consistent support.

  • Support students with additional needs, including autism, ADHD and associated learning difficulties.

  • Encourage positive communication, social interaction and healthy relationships.

  • Help students develop independence, self-esteem and confidence.

  • Maintain clear boundaries while offering empathy, reassurance and encouragement.

  • Follow individual support plans, school policies and safeguarding procedures.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are looking for someone who is genuinely passionate about supporting young people and understands the challenges that can come with mental health and emotional difficulties.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience supporting children, young people or vulnerable individuals with mental health, behavioural or emotional needs.

  • Have a good understanding of SEMH and the impact that trauma and adverse experiences can have on behaviour and learning.

  • Be patient, empathetic and able to build positive relationships.

  • Be confident supporting individuals who may present challenging behaviour.

  • Remain calm and professional in difficult situations.

  • Understand the importance of consistency, boundaries and positive reinforcement.

  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Be reliable, resilient and adaptable.

  • Work well as part of a team and be willing to learn.

  • Have a genuine desire to help young people overcome barriers and achieve their potential.

Experience working within a school is desirable but not essential.

We would particularly welcome applications from individuals with experience in:

  • Mental health support.

  • SEMH or SEN education.

  • Children's residential care.

  • Youth work or mentoring.

  • Behaviour support.

  • Therapeutic care.

  • Alternative provision.

  • Psychology or counselling.

  • Learning support or teaching assistance.

  • Supporting vulnerable individuals with complex needs.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is more than just a classroom support position.

You will be working with young people who may have experienced significant challenges and who need adults who can offer patience, understanding and consistency.

Every day will be different, and progress may look different for every student. Whether you're helping someone manage a difficult emotion, encouraging them to engage in a lesson or celebrating a small achievement, your support can have a lasting impact.

This role is ideal for someone who wants to develop a career within mental health, specialist education or pastoral support.
