Looking for an SEN teaching role in Manchester? At Tradewind Recruitment, we offer a range of SEN Teaching jobs across Manchester and the surrounding areas. We provide both junior level and senior level roles in Schools, Academies, and Special Needs Schools. As an SEN Teacher, you’ll either be working in a mixed class or with challenged individuals in mainstream settings. Whatever your preferences, Tradewind Recruitment can help your find your perfect SEN Teaching job in Manchester.

Whether you are already an SEN Teacher looking for a change, or you are just starting out as an SEN Teacher, we take the time to understand your needs and ensure that you understand what is expected of you. An ideal candidate for an SEN Teacher role possesses great levels of patience and skill, as well as a commitment to helping those who struggle socially and academically.

SEN Teaching jobs across Manchester

Depending on the job role and the school setting you are in, you could be helping a wide range of children who may be physically disabled, have sensory disabilities affecting their hearing or speech, be emotionally vulnerable, or have a learning difficulty such as Dyslexia, Autism or Global Delay. You will be helping these children with their everyday learning; these children might have difficulties with reading, writing and numeracy and the pupils can be as young as 5 years old.

Children with learning difficulties will find it hard to understand and process information compared to other students; your job is to help them in the best way possible with catered techniques according to their learning style and ability. You will also need to manage their behaviour and encourage their social and emotional development.

Job responsibilities of an SEN Teacher

Providing comfort to pupils is also a must, ensuring they can come to you in a time of need. As an SEN Teacher, you will be committing to values of respect, responsibility, and hard work. Depending on the job type you will need to be a creative individual who can produce innovative lesson plans that will engage students of all abilities.

  • Make lesson plans or adapt current plans in accordance with your pupil’s needs.
  • Keep track of each pupil’s development and liaise with parents/guardians regarding development.
  • Use learning equipment that is specialised for certain pupils.
  • Attend regular meetings as well as training days.
  • Communicate with people such as social workers, language and speech therapists, educational psychologists and physiotherapist.
  • Organise activities outside of the classroom for students.

Qualifications

If you are just starting out and want to become an SEN Teacher there are a few qualifications you can work towards, such as the Bachelor of Education (BEd) Degree or the Postgraduate Certificate in Education. You can also take part in the School Centred Initial Teacher Training, the Graduate Teacher Programme or the Registered Teacher Programme.

Skills/Attributes

  • Patience, positivity and empathy
  • Enthusiasm and the ability to understand and encourage others
  • Have a sense of humour
  • Flexible and be able to manage challenging behaviour
  • Have great communication skills
  • Critical thinker
  • Interpersonal skills – working with parents and building strong relationships

What can I do to improve my prospects?

As with any job in education, you must have the relevant qualifications, pass a DBS check (this check must be done before working with children), and you need to have some form of work experience within in a school. Having work experience within a Special Needs School will help your application to become a SEN Teacher given its stronger relevance to your chosen path.
